Terms of Service
This is not legal advice.
These terms govern use of Babelbook at babelbook.net, including the website, installed web app, Chrome/Edge extension preview, and Windows selection helper. Babelbook is operated by Nate (“we”, “us”). Contact: pjvogl3@gmail.com.
The service
Babelbook is an immersive translation workspace. You can translate text, compare interpretations, read language histories, and keep sources beside a draft. Accounts are created and signed in through Supabase (email and password, email link, and Google or Apple when those providers are enabled). Saved Library entries, Studio projects, preferences, and usage records are stored by us on Cloudflare, including D1. AI translation, speech, and image or PDF reading are performed by sending the relevant text or file to OpenAI when you explicitly ask for that processing. Reading a stored language profile does not by itself start an AI translation.
Creative-language mode, including fictional and constructed languages shown in Other Worlds, is available on the free plan and spends the same processing credits as other translation. Those languages are unofficial fan-made material. Babelbook is not affiliated with or endorsed by the rights holders. Drafts can invent words. They are not canon, a quotation, or a fluency credential.
Accounts and your content
You must provide a working email and keep your sign-in confidential. You are responsible for activity under your account. You retain rights in text, notes, glossaries, and files you submit. You grant us a limited license to host, display to you, process with the providers above, and show a share link to anyone who has that link, only as needed to run the features you use. Share links are read-only translations you choose to publish; anyone with the link can open them. Do not put secrets in a translation you share or paste into the extension or Windows helper.
The extension and Windows helper send selected text to Babelbook only after you open the translator and explicitly translate, listen, or save. The Windows helper is an unsigned preview that uses a keyboard shortcut and the clipboard. It is not a Microsoft Store product and it does not continuously record your screen.
Plans, credits, and acceptable use
The free plan includes public language histories, your Library, creative-language translation, and a monthly AI credit allowance, plus a one-time sign-up bonus of processing credits. Babelbook Plus is an optional subscription at $6.99 USD per month or $59 USD per year when live checkout is enabled. Plus increases the monthly credit allowance and includes Studio project creation, batch documents and OCR, and the desktop selection helper. One-time credit packs (200 credits for $2.99 USD) can be bought when checkout is enabled. Credits, prices, and feature limits are described on the Plus page and may change prospectively. Monthly allowance credits do not roll over. Purchased and sign-up credits stay until used, and a refund of a pack can remove the credited amount down to a zero balance. We can pause a feature, refuse abusive traffic, or close an account that breaks these terms or the law.
Do not misuse the service: no unlawful content, no attempt to break into accounts or the providers, no resale of access, and no use of the output to claim an official translation or an endorsement you do not have. AI output can be wrong. You decide whether to rely on it.
Disclaimer and liability
The service is provided “as is.” Language histories may quote or adapt third-party sources, including Wikipedia under CC BY-SA where that is stated on the page. We do not promise uninterrupted availability, a particular translation quality, or that a fictional-language draft matches any rights holder’s materials. To the extent the law allows, Nate is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data or profits, arising from use of Babelbook. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot legally be limited.
Changes and law
We may update these terms by posting a new version on this page. If you keep using Babelbook after the update, the new terms apply to later use. These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. Venue for disputes is in the state and federal courts located in Virginia, except where a consumer protection law of your home requires otherwise. Questions: pjvogl3@gmail.com.
